Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
I will give you bread from heaven.
A Ministry For All Catholics
The Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist is the ordained priest or deacon. However, when the situation warrants it - as it does at weekend Masses, lay people may be delegated as 'Extraordinary Ministers' to help distribute the Eucharistic Bread and Wine.
This delegation actually comes from the Diocese and the Bishop. When ministers are trained and approved by the pastor their names are sent to Rockford where they are ratified and certified, after which they may begin to serve. Lay people may serve up to two consecutive three-year terms, after which they must take a three year leave from this ministry. The purpose of this is to give as many people as possible an opportunity to serve.
To be a eucharistic minister you need to be at least 16 years old, have received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, and be a catholic in good standing with the Church (no marriage issues etc.). There is a three hour training and you must go to a retreat or additional training session at least once a year.
Trainings and other events are organized by the Eucharistic Ministry Committee (new members always welcome!), and the coordinator is Anita DeLano. Please e-mail Anita if you have further questions and would like to join this ministry.
